ActivitiesAround, About & Cycling
For rides up to 5 miles follow the woodland paths and coastal trails around the site and the village. For the technically advanced, trails through the newly extended and very varied Dalbeattie Town Wood and Moyle Hill include; "Hard Rock" and the famous "Slab". Easy trails go to the beaches of Kippford, Rockcliffe and Sandyhills. Routes start from only 200 yards outside the site and are almost entirely off public roads. Nearby, 'Mabie Forest' has been developed as another of Scotland's Premier cycle areas.
Breakout By Car
One particular favourite is a drive along some lovely lochs and the 'Raiders Road' an old drove road through Galloway Forest Park. Stop to view (or add to!) an area of woodland sculpture, then picnic beside the 'Otter Pool'.
After lunch visit the Deer centre and the Clatteringshaws Loch, where 'Bruce's Stone' recalls Robert the Bruce's first victory in his quest to claim his crown. Travel on to New Galloway - a beautiful upland village. Lastly, while driving back along Loch Ken for some 12 miles, stop at the outdoor centre to book some high activity fun for another day. All these places are within 10 miles of each other, so you won't spend hours in the car.
There are special events on throughout the year, the Kirkcudbright Summer Festival (Thursday evenings) and Palnackie 'World Flounder Tramping', various agricultural shows etc.
Castle, Gardens & Crafts
Dumfries & Galloway's turbulent past has left a legacy of many castles and historic monuments. At Buittle Tower & Tournament venue, just 4 miles away, you can see what new developments the recent archaeological dig has turned up.
Sweetheart Abbey, one of Scotland' s most romantic with its poignant tale of love lost, is within 20 minutes drive, as are Threave Castle and Gardens of Threave and Arbigland - Mighty Caerlavock Castle and Logan Botanic Garden are further afield.
Near to the site, Barnbarroch Pottery is one of the several which sell beautiful and individually made pottery and other crafts.
Try an early morning round of golf at Craigieknowes, the 9 hole golf course just 100 yards away. During the season the 'Teeroom' offers welcome refreshments. Covend 18 hole course is only three miles away (spectacular views!)
Trips are available at Kippford or Kirkcudbright. Boats can be launched at Kippford, where there is an active yacht club. Sailing courses are available at Loch Ken (18 miles).
From Kippford, an extremely pretty coastal walk passes the beach and follows the shore to the neighbouring seaside village of Rockcliffe. Stop here for a snack and decide which of the marked forest trails to return to the Site. Longer coastal trails can be followed one way, using the local regular bus to get back.
A large beautiful sandy beach is available at Sandyhills (approximately 3 miles).
Within 4 miles where riding lessons can be arranged.
